As part of the national campaign to involve all age groups in enterprise education, primary students in the Burnley area have taken part in a Young Enterprise Primary Programme Masterclass. The three hour session, which focuses on trading and the processes involved in running a company, introduced students aged 9 and 10 to the world of business.
During the afternoon, each of the groups participating set-up their own jewellery business purchasing beads and string with Young Enterprise currency, making them into bracelets and selling them to an adult in a hypothetical trading scenario. The task taught students how to work as a team, deal with finances and overall ensure they made a healthy profit.
By introducing business education at a primary level, students place a foot on the first step of the Young Enterprise ladder to success. Programme manager for East Lancashire, Anita Rate commented ‘these programmes work with very young children and many people could think the concepts of business are way beyond them, this is not the case.
Young Enterprise North West are always looking for volunteers to deliver in schools, if you area interested in working with us to make a difference to the futures of young people in the Burnley area, call Anita Rate on 01254584048.
Find out if your local school is involved in any of the Young Enterprise programmes, whether students are running a real company for a year in Company Programme or taking part in one of our highly effective shorter programmes. If they aren’t why don’t you be the inspiration and point them in our direction?
